Dive the Cathedrals at Lanai
A Natural Cathedral Experience: Sculpted by Time
On the way across the channel, keep your eye out for dolphins - this is the trip where you're most likely to get to see some on the way to or from the island of Lanai. Once we get to Lanai, the captain will choose the day's sites based on conditions and other local boat traffic. Prepare to experience great swim throughs and underwater ledges as well as some fish we don't get to see at our regular Maui locations.
The Lanai Cathedrals are a testament to Mother Nature's artistry. Volcanic eruptions sculpted the landscape, leaving behind lava tubes that flowed into the ocean thousands (or even tens of thousands) of years ago. Over time, the roofs of these tubes partially collapsed, creating the dramatic caverns we see today. Sunlight filtering through cracks and openings in the ceiling bathes the interior in an ethereal glow, making you feel like you've entered a submerged cathedral – a truly awe-inspiring sight for divers of all experience levels.
Important Note: Though it is our intention to dive at least one of the Cathedrals sites, ocean conditions may mandate that we choose alternate sites. Your safety is our priority, so keep an open mind; in the uncommon event that we cannot dive one of the actual "cathedrals", we WILL introduce you to some other excellent dive sites!
A Diver's Paradise: Explore the Variety of Lanai's Dive Sites
While the Cathedrals are the crown jewels, Lanai offers a treasure trove of other dive adventures and diving these sites is just as much of a treat for our crew as it is for you!
- Swim with the Colorful Cast of Characters at Fish Rock: Imagine darting through vibrant coral reefs teeming with butterflyfish, angelfish, and Moorish idols. Fish Rock is a photographer's paradise, bursting with life and color.
- Salute the Sea at Sgt. Major: The vibrantly colored sargeant major fish (mostly yellow/white with black stripes) is endemic to Hawaii and is the most common damselfish in the islands. That said, Hawaii is known to have a variety of these damsels, from the indo-pacific version, to a mix of the two versions! Keep an eye out for playful octopus and shy reef sharks as well!
- Discover Hidden Gems at Shark Fin: Sharks? Maybe not; the dive site is names after the lava "fin" sticking out of the water at this location. Explore coral encrusted pinnacles teeming with colorful marine life and a really interesting underwater seascape.
- Unearth the Secrets of Menpachi Caves: This labyrinthine lava tube is a haven for curious divers. Weave through swim-throughs and discover a hidden world teeming with lobsters, eels, and fascinating crustaceans.
- A dive site called No Name: When the conditions are just right, we can dive the inside of a blow hole, locally known as Thunder Dome, before continuing to explore nearby walls and pinnacles.
These are just a few of the incredible dive sites waiting to be explored off of Lanai. With crystal-clear waters, diverse marine life, and unique geological formations, Lanai offers an unforgettable underwater experience for every diver.
Ready to embark on your own underwater adventure?
We have light snacks on board, as well as juice, soda and water, and on this longer charter, we also serve wraps for lunch. Since this is a longer charter, divers are welcome to bring additional food, as long as it fits on their under-bench dry storage.
Note: If it has been more than two years since your last dive, the Maui Diamond requires that you take a guided dive or a refresher ahead of time or hire a private guide for your boat dives.
Do you need rental gear? No problem! We can provide you with a BCD and regulator (and whatever else you may need) for just $30.
The Small Print:
Though we are planning to dive Lanai, Mother Nature is the ultimate boss of what we do. Should we find ourselves in conditions that do not allow us to safely dive at Lanai, we will find another more appropriate site or two and take it from there. We will not issue refunds if we find that the weather will not permit us to dive at a certain site. We WILL issue refunds for the cost difference between this charter and the one we actually end up doing if the price is less. Got questions? Just ask!
